Outdoor commercial spaces ask more from surface materials than appearance alone. Flooring must work with the architectural concept while standing up to constant foot traffic, changing weather conditions, routine cleaning and long-term public use.
At MIXC Village Dongguan, RUNPIN's Limestone Series was developed to bring the warm, naturally weathered character of limestone into a large-scale commercial environment, while addressing the practical requirements of both outdoor paving and indoor public areas.
Designed by Italian architect Gianni Ranaulo, MIXC Village Dongguan brings together retail, landscape and leisure within an open-air commercial setting.
Rather than functioning as a conventional enclosed shopping mall, the project uses outdoor streets, landscaping and public spaces to create a relaxed, destination-oriented retail experience. This architectural approach called for paving materials with a softer, more natural character—something that could complement the warm atmosphere of the space without looking overly polished or uniform.
Natural limestone provided the visual reference. Its muted tones, subtle mineral variation and gently weathered appearance matched the project's design direction. But for a high-traffic outdoor commercial environment, appearance was only part of the material decision.
Natural limestone has a distinctive tactile and visual quality, but its porous structure can create practical challenges in demanding outdoor applications.
In commercial environments exposed to frequent pedestrian traffic, rain, sunlight and regular cleaning, issues such as staining, edge damage, cracking and ongoing protective maintenance can become important considerations.
For MIXC Village Dongguan, the material therefore needed to achieve two goals at the same time: the visual warmth and tonal variation associated with natural limestone, and the consistency and durability expected from a surface used across a large public commercial project.
To respond to these requirements, RUNPIN developed a limestone-inspired terrazzo solution specifically for the project.
The material is produced using an Italian Breton vacuum high-pressure forming line, while a multi-color compression process creates the irregular tonal shifts and layered texture associated with natural limestone. Rather than reproducing a perfectly uniform surface, the design allows controlled variation across the material, helping the installation feel more natural when viewed over a large area.
Performance was also considered for the outdoor environment. The material was developed to provide improved flexural performance and resistance to liquid penetration, helping reduce common concerns such as edge damage, cracking and staining.
For routine maintenance, the surface can be cleaned using standard commercial floor-cleaning equipment, reducing the need for repeated protective treatments associated with some natural limestone installations.
One of the more distinctive elements of the project is the use of multiple coordinated colors rather than a single uniform surface.
RUNPIN's Limestone Series was installed across outdoor plazas and indoor public areas, with different tones combined throughout the paving scheme. This creates gradual shifts in color and texture while maintaining a consistent overall material language across the project.
The palette moves between soft greige, warm beige, light grey and deeper earth tones. Products including Ancient Century, Norway Grey, French Brown and Sinai Pearl contribute different tonal and textural qualities while remaining within the same limestone-inspired design language.
Ancient Century combines a grey-beige base with subtle mottled particles, creating a calm, weathered appearance reminiscent of naturally aged stone. Its restrained variation makes it particularly suitable for larger paved areas where texture is needed without creating excessive visual movement.

Norway Grey introduces layered grey tones and fine multicolor variation. The surface remains visually understated from a distance while revealing more variation at closer range, allowing it to work alongside warmer limestone tones without making the overall paving scheme feel fragmented.

French Brown shifts the collection toward a warmer direction.
Its brown base and fine granular texture bring a more sun-warmed character to the surface, making it useful for areas where the design calls for greater warmth while remaining within the same limestone-inspired material family.
Sinai Pearl uses a softer, lighter base with fine mineral particles to create a brighter and more open appearance.
For the project, related tones were also developed within the Sinai Pearl palette, allowing lighter and deeper warm shades to be combined across larger installations and helping the paving transition more naturally between adjacent spaces.

The completed installation shows how a limestone-inspired surface can work across both architectural and landscape environments.
Large-format paving, smaller modular areas and mixed-color layouts are used alongside planting, storefronts and open public spaces, allowing the flooring to become part of the overall landscape rather than a visually separate element.
This is particularly relevant for contemporary retail destinations, where architects increasingly look for materials that can connect indoor and outdoor areas while maintaining a consistent design language.
For MIXC Village Dongguan, the result is a surface that retains the soft, natural character associated with limestone while responding to the everyday demands of a busy commercial environment.
The project demonstrates how limestone-inspired terrazzo can provide architects and project buyers with another option when natural stone aesthetics, material consistency and long-term use all need to be considered together.
